Come See the NNEMAP Dance Craze!

Hazel Black, NNEMAP Food Pantry volunteer and Ohio State dance major, has focused her senior project around her experience at NNEMAP Food Pantry. We’re not going to lie here–we’re pretty flattered by all the attention!
Hazel’s artistic interpretation of that experience, “Food and Shelter,” will be making its world debut this Saturday, December 1, at 5:00pm at Sullivant Hall (1813 N. High St. / 43210) on the OSU Campus (best parking spot: Ohio Union garage on High Street).
Come support Hazel’s work as she celebrates our work in the community. Hope to see you there!
PS: The performance is scheduled to conclude by 6:00pm. The football team doesn’t play until 8:00pm, so you can’t use that as an excuse!

Wexner Med Center Chef Sharpens Our Skills

NNEMAP recently welcomed Chef Jim Warner to the pantry for an afternoon of kitchen fun and instruction. Warner, who is Program Director, Food and Nutrition at the nearby Wexner Medical Center, spent a couple of hours teaching a knife skills training course to NNEMAP customers and staff.

Warner demonstrated how to chop, slice and prepare mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, yellow squash, onions, cilantro and more for a sumptuous and super-quick stir-fry recipe. We weren’t getting a few tips from a local prep cook here. Warner received his training at New York’s prestigious Culinary Institute of America, the premiere culinary school in the country. Among professionals, this guy is a professional!

After furiously chopping a pile of produce, Chef Warner demonstrated his take on the classic stir-fry. He fired up a couple of propane burners and quickly seared off the fruits (and vegetables) of the class’s labor. We plated up samples of the dish as a light afternoon snack and sent students home with their own chopped goodies to make for dinner that night.

The NNEMAP class enjoyed Warner’s hands-on approach and thorough instruction. The feeling was mutual. “This is a great group,” Warner said. “Everyone is really engaged!” Some students in the class had experience in the foodservice industry, others just cook at home. Regardless of experience or skill level, everyone in attendance (including this staff member!) gained an abundance of practical knowledge about knife skills and safety.

“I really enjoyed myself,” said one student as she made her way out after class. “We have to do this more often.” We couldn’t agree more!

NNEMAP Food Pantry extends a special thanks to Chef Jim Warner for sharing his time and talent with us!

Buckeye Volunteers Spring (Clean) Into Action

There may have been a little snow on the ground Saturday morning, but our superb group of student volunteers from the Ohio State University’s “Pay it Forward” program came to NNEMAP with willing hands and warm hearts.

In just a few short hours, our 10 guests swept and mopped the client waiting area; deep-cleaned inside, under and behind our freezers; assisted with some equipment repairs; repackaged about 100 pounds of bulk flour and sugar; organized our shopping bag and cart area; assembled a pair of shelving units; and redesigned our display board.

Best of all, they did it with great enthusiasm and cheerful smiles:

We’re not positive, but we’re pretty sure they slipped off and did even more incredibly helpful things for us when we weren’t looking. When we opened for business on Monday, our building was squeaky clean.

Thanks again to our student friends at Pay it Forward. When we need a special group of volunteers, we know we can always “Go Bucks!”
